A Brief History
How I got here In the beginning..........................
Photographic & General Instruments in Redfern NSW 9
circa early 80's
I understudied as an 18-year-old with a brilliant group of technicians who were each master's of the Camera Repair craft. I cut my teeth (so-to -speak) on Voigtlander, Yashica Electro, Canon QL and other similar vintage classics.
By pure chance I was offered a position with News Limited who published all the major newspapers and magazines.
This was a headfirst challenge which brought me into contact with a diverse range of character's, mainly Photographers, Journalist and Hi-Tech Engineers. News limited photographer's accounted for several hundred pieces of gear, including Nikon F2, and a range of lens's from 8mm fisheye to large telephote Opticals. Elinchrom studio flash, Metz flash and all the accessories that exist.
I progressed as the Service Manager to H.Levinson's who were the Importer-Distributors for Olympus, Bronica, Sunpak, then;
A short stint at Hanimex-Praktica
Following this, a shorter term overseas then I returned and joined Leitz-Wetzler where my main function was service to Leica Camera'
I'm in my mid-30,s now and its time I was in business
I joined the Camera House Group and with my newish Wife (Yvonne) as business manager; Started Western Camera & Video Service.
Yvonne managed the retail side of 2 Francise stores and I operated the Camera Repair workshop with 5 other Technicians.
This period saw the establishment of digital (in all its forms). Thankfully I had the good fortune via Sony and Canon products to transfer many existing skills into the digital service realm.
We serviced multiple dealers and direct clients, with repairs to camera, flash and video plus a plethora of digitally based technology systems.
In more recent times I sold or downscaled the heavy retail operation and am content to carry out repairs in my own separate space by beautiful Botany Bay
